Dr. Athenie Galvez

PT, DPT, OCS

Athenie is a queer, non-binary, Filipinx, and able-bodied physical therapist. They grew up in the Bay Area, playing basketball in their driveway and the drums in the garage. In college, they worked as a student athletic trainer, learning how to support Division 1 athletes’ performance and recovery. Those experiences led them to pursue a Doctorate of Physical Therapy at UCSF/SFSU where they explored elective coursework in strength and conditioning, running biomechanics, pediatrics, pain neuroscience, health equity and humanitarianism. Since becoming a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy, Athenie has worked in a variety of settings including sports medicine, home health, hospice, telehealth and pediatrics. Athenie most recently achieved board certification as a clinical specialist in Orthopedics from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.

Athenie aims to empower people through authentic connection, intentional collaboration, and movement education. Their approach draws from both academic research and community cultivated knowledge – data you can find in scholarly journals and wisdom that comes directly from those with lived experience. Athenie’s work and community engagement centers the 2S-LGBTQIA+ community, people of color, and neurodiverse folks. Athenie’s hope is that people of all bodies and genders can remain engaged with their communities through movement and play.

Athenie and their partner have 4 senior rescue dogs who keep them active. When not at home with their own dogs, they often volunteer at Frosted Faces Foundation in Ramona, CA.
Athenie is a hobbyist at heart. They love to cook and have a half dozen cookbooks from the library on their shelf at any given time.
